Need some advice on training my dog…situation inside.?
So, my dog is about 8 months old. Her name is Socks and she is a black lab. She is really smart dog, and behaves very well. The only problem we are having is that she keeps jumping out of the fence, even though we have done everything we can to try and keep her in. But the odd thing is, is that she only does it when my husband and I are gone. If one of us is home, she will stay in the yard just fine.
Any suggestions on what we can do to train to her stay in the yard?
Having shepherds, I have always had fence jumpers. There are a number of things you can do to keep her from jumping the fence, but rather than try to ‘jump proof’ the entire fence, I recommend investing in a good kennel with a top, and a concrete floor so she can’t dig out.
We have a large privacy fence now that the dogs can’t jump, but in every other place and and every other fence, my dogs could get out.
You can run the invisible ‘electric’ fence along the existing fence, get a higher or different type of fence, or look into ‘coyote roller’ to keep her in. http://www.coyoteroller.com/home
But your dog will be far safer if not left to have the run of the yard while you’re gone. Keep her crated indoors, or provide her with a nice kennel outside.
Even though my dogs don’t jump my current fence, I still keep them inside the house, or in their kennel when we leave home.
Good luck!
